Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Training

Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training is an advanced rehabilitation technique that allows patients to improve muscle strength and reduce muscle loss while exercising with significantly lighter resistance. During BFR training, a specialized cuff is placed around the upper portion of an arm or leg and carefully adjusted to partially restrict blood flow to the working muscles. This creates a physiological environment that stimulates many of the same muscle-building responses associated with heavier resistance training, but with less stress on healing joints and tissues. BFR can be particularly beneficial following surgery or injury, when pain, weakness, or weight-bearing restrictions may limit traditional strengthening exercises. When appropriately prescribed and monitored by a trained physical therapist, BFR provides an effective way to accelerate strength gains, preserve muscle mass, and help patients progress safely toward higher-level activity.
